In the past week or two I've been hacking away at a toy app called "gifrap", and it's been fun! (It's here: https://github.com/shuboxio/gifrap/)
Why?
1. TO HAVE FUN! Yaaaay "FUN!"
2. To get back in touch with new Rails (and the ecosystem) features that I haven't had a chance to play with much -- turbo, stimulus, vite, action-cable, GoodJob.
3. To build something that others can self-host (if they want).
4. To integrate my main side project (shubox.io) with my own deployed app.
There are so many small halo effects to a project like this -- which has also been delightful! I self-host my own instance of postgres so simplifying the maintenance and administration of that has been cleaved off into a small fledgling project called pgchief - https://github.com/jayroh/pgchief
And while I'm building `gifrap` out I've been slowly moving over everything that *I like* a Rails app to have, and utilize, into a rails template in my dotfiles: https://github.com/jayroh/dotfiles.new/tree/master/tag-ruby/rails_template
And while I'm off this month I'm also doing other stuff that has nothing to do with computers - fixing things around our home, reading comic books, catching up on some tv shows, reading books at the park, going to the gym.
All that is to say - Europe has this month of August thing figured out. Americans - we fucked up somewhere. Pretty bad.
We all work way way too much.
