@bradenslen True, protest is not necessarily right or wrong. But I think it’s possible to judge the purpose of the protest. There’s a world of difference between Unite the Right and the Extinction Rebellion.

One hint is whether their rhetoric about eliminating people literal or figurative. At the moment (and this could change), leftish chants about eliminating billionaires are about raising taxes; the right’s version about “Jews will not replace us” is a lot more sinister.

@Bruce I'm specifically not getting into the purpose, just pointing out that both sides have given up on writing a polite letter to their Congressperson and are resorting to more active measures either ballot box or streets or both.

@bradenslen Big social and political change has always involved going out into the streets. The 1964 Civil Rights Act didn’t get passed because of a letter writing campaign. Non-violent direct action is an essential tool—if as nothing as to give political cover.. As FDR said, the public has to make their politicians do things.
