@baldur "Humans will never land on the moon" ?

But you may be right in that we'll probably kill ourselves off by depleting all our resources before then.

@cwebber Landing somewhere, even staying a while, is completely different from settling there. Attempting to settle on Mars is overwhelmingly likely to be a death sentence. Worse yet, it’s likely to be a death sentence that takes decades to fully hit those that try to live there. Attempting to settle anywhere has historically been a death sentence. You can 10X that risk for Mars.

@baldur That's true, and I'm doubtful myself, though I'm skeptical about throwing the word "never" in there... even though I think it's not the goal people should be working towards right now (let's make sure the only inhabitable sphere we can currently live on doesn't fall apart)

@cwebber @baldur On the topic of moving to Mars, you should check out the 2018 movie Aniara. I saw it recently at a Scandinavian film festival but imagine that it would be available elsewhere too (more of a delayed thing in Australia). It deals with the human condition and perils of space travel very nicely.

@baldur

Attempting to settle anywhere has historically been a death sentence.

That hasn’t stopped people from trying, of course.
