When discussing funding, sustainability, and relationships with corporate sponsors, the distinction between Free Software and Open Source becomes very relevant. Lumping them together in these discussions is counter-productive. (Which is something I’ve done myself, mea culpa)

@baldur Good point. Free software, as I understand it, is distinct from Open Source in that its licensing enforces sharing changes as contributions to the community. Open Source, as I have heard it used is a much looser term. Does this match your understanding?

@fgtech Yeah. There's also the issue that Open Source was specifically invented in 1998 to be a more business-friendly alternative to Free Software. The purpose of the term was specifically to scrub away the ideological aspect of Free Software and market collaborative volunteer work as a way for companies to lower costs and improve their software.

@baldur Right, so it’s an important distinction indeed. I suppose projects that wish to be better compensated by corporate users should be taking a close look at their licensing terms. Making it less convenient for wealthy corporations to use code for free would be a smart move.
