My Bellroy Via Backpack, combined with my Rimowa spinner, has been all I’ve needed for this week in Singapore.

Travelling carry-on only is extremely liberating and removes so much of the stress of long distance travel.

Though it really requires focus and care when packing.

@TheMacPsych I rarely go anywhere, but have read how some people manage minimalist ‘carry on only’ travel. It’s incredible, I think most people overpack even on holidays.

@BenSouthwood @TheMacPsych We spent almost 4 months on the road with a carry on backpack each. Traveling never felt better. We took 22 flights in that period of time, and it was brilliant. Never again have we checked luggage.

@maique Merino wool clothing is, apparently, brilliant for travelling.

@BenSouthwood I have also heard that. We do not own a single merino garment 🙂

@TheMacPsych @BenSouthwood @maique Funny, I was reading an article recently that argued you should check in a bag — I can’t remember the reasons. I nearly always do anyway, because I’ll be taking a razor and I can’t be bothered to split shaving cream etc into small containers. Also, you now have to pay extra to use the overhead bins, so a carry-on bag needs to fit under the seat in front (and I have long, restless legs).

@artkavanagh Would love to read that one. I don’t think I have ever found an airline here where you have to pay to store your bag on the overhead bins! Anyway, I find the saved time when you check in, and especially when you land, is a godsend. We flew into some countries where visa lines would grow by the minute, or passport checks would take a while, and being first in line, every time, was awesome.

@maique I found the article. I’ll admit that the arguments aren’t very compelling (apart from the one about being able to get around the airport without having to bother about your bag), which must be why I didn’t remember them! So maybe I should just take carry-on luggage. But what about my razor? And, I’m pretty sure that the last time I flew Ryanair (Dublin-Toulouse), they were charging for use of the overhead bins. I hope I’m wrong about that.

@artkavanagh That sounds like Ryanair, alright.

@artkavanagh Thank you 🙂 I have to agree with you, pretty lame arguments, and they even point out a ton of good ones against their point!

@artkavanagh @maique A safety razor 🪒 is allowed in carry-on. I keep my toiletries bag, charging cords pouch, and set of power adapters always is one of the carry-on bags. We use packing cubes for our clothes. We did carry-on even for our 10-day international travel. Works really great. No stress of losing baggage and waiting for it on the carousel especially with now-regular delays on all flights

Although we checked in bags during our Rocky Mountain trip coz of our hiking boots and hiking poles

@pratik I didn’t know that about a safety razor. Thanks, that could make a big difference.

@BenSouthwood It’s easy when going to somewhere warm. All I packed was T-shirts and shorts, plus one work outfit for a presentation I was giving. Not sure I could manage it when visiting somewhere much colder.

@artkavanagh I think a lot of it comes down to personal preference. I don't mind wheeling a spinner around the airport if it means I can get out of their more quickly when we land. And there's no anxiety about luggage going missing and all the hassle that comes with that. We've cultivated quite a collection of toiletries in miniature, so that's no longer an issue.

@TheMacPsych I think I’m persuaded now that it’s better to travel light. That doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m going to change my habits, though. Time will tell. Thanks.
