I took an old Toshiba Chromebook 2015 and turned it into a Linux Mint 22.1 “Xia” laptop. So far so good. This Toshiba CB has one of the best screens I’ve ever used in a laptop.

@apoorplayer we are living parallel lives! i just did the same with an old macbook air. Now running Ubuntu!
@velocykel I have a 2017 Macbook Air I was also thinking about turning into a Linux machine! How did it go for you? Any tips? Issues?
@apoorplayer it was incredibly easy. I loaded Ubuntu, and it took about a half hour. Truly turned garbage into a treasure! I’m enjoying testing it and seeing what it can and can’t do. Good luck and lmk how it goes!
@velocykel I successfully loaded Mint/Cinnamon onto the 2017 MB Air! I had a small issue with the wifi, but have a wifi dongle and used it to upload/install updated drivers. Testing it out now. Touchpad seems a bit touchy, but otherwise solid. Still, I wonder if I just should have given the computer away with MacOS on it. I doubt anyone will want a free Linux machine.
@apoorplayer Are there advantages to Linux, in your opinion? Is it mainly that it is non-proprietary so you’re not beholden to a corporation? Or is there more?
@drwalt It’s basically a continuation of my attempt to get out from under the tech giants and their invasion of privacy. I also see it as a form of personal protest, since all these tech companies are getting into bed with Trump. Open source and free works for me now that I’m retired.
