As I ponder App Store business models, my mind keeps coming back to this: making Snapthread free with a tasteful watermark in the corner, with an in-app purchase to permanently remove it. People who already paid for the app would be grandfathered in. Thoughts?

@becky I can commiserate. Whatever your revenue model is, don't undervalue your work. If I had a free app, I would try to charge more than your current app price to unlock the full version. I know competition makes that hard but perhaps you are in a niche and your users will pay.

@becky It’s how every photo/video editing app does it. Another approach is to remove a feature from free tier, for example say include video too if paid. What needs to analysed is what will inspire more users to pay.

@becky Watermark removal seems like a decent incentive. Probably worth trying I think. You’d surely get more downloads and users. Purchases could go up or down, but you have good ratings so reason to hope up over time with more users and exposure.

@amit Yeah, that’s kinda what I was thinking (that every other video app does it). I could also eventually add other “premium” features besides the watermark removal behind the paywall.

@mjdescy Ha, great minds must think alike because I was just thinking that I could try increasing the price by a dollar or two once I make it an in-app purchase. 😀
