After giving Reeder numerous second chances over the years, iCloud sync has broken yet again and a full erasure and re-install of the app/iCloud data hasn’t fixed it… As the dev support is essentially non-existent for the app, I’ve moved wholesale to Lire. Determined not to go back. Not worth it.

@DaveyCraney While I never had an issue with Reeder’s iCloud sync, I do think it’s worthwhile to use a traditional sync service so that you can try out different apps with the same feeds!

@jarrod Very true! I have thought I might try a sync service at some point. Thankfully I could export my feeds as OPML so it wasn't too bad and I'll see how I get on for now.

@DaveyCraney I again tried iCloud sync in Reeder a few days ago, as I was determined to drop Feedbin and its associated cost. Unsurprisingly, it didn’t even make it 24 hours before already being numerous articles behind Feedbin. I understand iCloud is rate limited, but after only an hour and a half of setting it up, no new articles were fetched—they had come and gone in Feedbin long before. Like yourself I never even considered contacting Reeder support, as my three previous attempts resulted in crickets.

I may try NNW as a last ditch attempt, otherwise I’ll throw in the towel and keep Feedbin.

@pimoore I’ve found NNW with iCloud sync to be very reliable. I’m sure it depends on usage though, mine is relatively light (a dozen or so feeds that I check a couple of times a day)

@pimoore Do you use Readwise Reader? I imported all my feeds there recently. I like the overall experience.

@jasonekratz You’re probably right, I can’t let my crusade against subscriptions go too far in the opposite direction. No point throwing the baby out with the bath water, if it worsens my experience with arguably my most important digital service.

@amit Readwise Reader never took off with me, sadly. My primary reason for using Readwise would be its book reading, but since I mostly read on paper its value for the cost seems greatly lessened to me.

@pimoore Yeah, I can see why it might not work for many. It does for me though. I have found a good, frictionless workflow for my feeds and read later. That's the only reason I stick with it.

@DaveyCraney @pimoore Do you think the issue is something like the number of feeds it’s trying to pull at once?

@gregmoore I’ve been pretty consistent with the amount of sites I follow (35 sites) for a long time. I thought it could be the size of the history, saved/favourited stories etc but after deleting the iCloud data and re importing my feeds it started to go out of sync pretty much straight away.

iCloud logs are a bit mystic and only complain about syncs not finishing or files being “locked” but who knows… I’ve not been happy with reeder for a while so at least it’s pushed me to make a change.

@pimoore yep. I’ve used Reeder since V1 and I’ve raised probably 4-5 problems/queries over that time and never had a response from the Dev.

I still remember when an iPad screen size change took several months to update and fix as well. Great visual design but the support has always been terrible.

@DaveyCraney I’d say that 35 is extremely reasonable. I’ve never noticed mine not working but that could also be because I’d hardly notice if it missed any?
