I am tired of websites with pop downs asking for permission to show notifications. Why would I enable that? Notifications are already a headache to manage, even the ones just from the apps. Why would I let websites also bug me incessantly?

@amit You can get rid of those permission dialogs by disabling support for notifications in your browser. In Safari, open Preferences and go to Websites > Notifications. And make sure to uncheck the box that says Allow websites to ask for permission to send notifications.
It works similarly in the other browsers. Open settings and search for notifications.
@sod Well, I am talking about the prompt that websites show on their website, not the browser one. This pop-up is the dialog that website display to get your permission to show the actual browser notification dialog. I hope it makes sense 😒

notifications are initiated by the publisher, not the reader. In my proposal, the individual would choose in her own good time what to add to the watch list, whereas under the present system the site asks for permission to show notifications, perhaps at a moment when she doesn’t want to think about that because she’s busy trying to read a post. I don’t believe I’ve ever consented to being sent notifications by a website, yet I’m clearly amenable to the idea of being told about updates …
