@alexink You could just consider it $20 per year towards the expenses of running the mastodon instance. As someone who runs a mastodon instance, they may be free to join but they're not free to run and it is encouraged, regardless of what instance you are on, to seek out the donation link of your instance admin to help offset their expenses for providing the service. If you find value in the instance and the community there, then that's less than $2/mo towards the cost of that provision.

@jeannie When you put it like that it seems petty to moan about the cost of a coffee per month. And no, I realise and appreciate that running an instance involves cost in time, money, and effort.

@alexink $20 per year is, in my opinion, a small contribution to the very expensive business of running an instance as big as social.lol. I'm pretty sure it does not cover the cost of my username alone. In the past I was, for a while, using an instance for one, with the incredible help of @vincent, and that would probably be the monthly cost in the end, not yearly.

All other services are really good as well. The fee is worth it for any of the services on their own, in my opinion.

Having said that, I still have credit on my time bank, I can get you a gift code for another year, if you're really interested. It would be my pleasure. Let me know.

@Ddanielson It’s not a “gift code” per se, but rather time I have left on my Time Bank, from the referrals I sent to the service. I only have a year’s worth, I’m sorry.

@maique You are beyond being a gentleman, thank you for your kind offer. But I've had an exchange with Adam, and yes, you're right this is a small price to pay for a yearly service. So will be paying my own way. Again, thank you for the kind offer. Save it for another day.

@alexink Huzzah to this thread of pay-for-software support. We’ve been tuned to get things for “free” and if we want to stem the tide of terrible internet we’ll have to learn new norms. I’m the same way, and plenty cost conscious even though technically I shouldn’t need to be these days. I appreciate you supporting omg.lol+!
