Who does Flickr? I use it as a storage location, but I admit I don’t have a community over there. Now I’ve ditched Instagram, I wish it had more people and everyday photos in addition to the ‘high art’ that tends to be its focus. : blog.andrewcanion.com

@canion I rejoined in 2019 when they put out the call for subscribers. But admittedly ignored it and ignored the renewal notices. Oops.

I see so many great photos here. I am not sure if I can get the motivation to participate there.

@jean I would love to see some sort of auto-magic integration between Flickr and Micro.Blog. They seem philosophically aligned. @manton

@canion Wouldn’t they be competitors in a way? (Here thinking about Sunlit especially).

I used to be on Flickr, but left years ago. Haven’t paid attention to it lately.

@odd I suppose. I envision storage on Flickr with all the detailed EXIF information available, but the social element living on a micro.blog. Probably pipe dreams.

@canion I never took to it. I used 500px for a while. Similar, amazing photography, but no culture. And the standard of photography is glossy, super polished, super post-processed.

I take photographs to be away from a computer and to connect with people. The big sites felt like competition.

@canion I see! Hadn’t thought about that. The Sunlit strip the EXIF, doesn’t it? With the EXIF, you lose the anonymity, and with it, you have a lot of options I guess.

@canion I’ve always kept mine for the photos I actually like. Whereas, Instagram was for snapshots that need/are improved by filters.

@canion I did Flickr, but let my pro membership expire in December. I just don’t use it that much anymore.

@canion I use it pretty actively, and try to post an image at least weekly, and also to provide meaningful feedback to other posters.

I’ve found that the community is getting back to one that is about the photography and the photos, not so much the insta-fame seeking photographer.

Find me at www.flickr.com/photos/bl…

@maique it’s a bit like Windows 10. Looks new and pretty on the surface but you quickly end up back at old Flickr like the Organizr which is akin to the Windows XP Control Panel.

@canion I love and will be sticking with Flickr. Have since 2004 and it’s still my favorite place to post and view photos online. Shame the community has dwindled but I don’t enjoy any of the others. The mobile app isn’t great but IMVHO photos aren’t for viewing on tiny screens anyway. I like that Flickr nudges us to the desktop and large photos. They also have a robust and open API and actually encourage its use. I’ll stay there if I’m the last person left :)

@canion I joined over 15 years ago, and loved it at first. But the ownership changes, poorly thought-through interface redesigns and concerns about its future put me off — I’ve now been burned too many times by putting hours of time into Internet services that suddenly go away. When Readmill died, my heart broke.

I think this is why I love micro.blog so much. If it disappeared tomorrow, I would miss the community, but I wouldn’t feel that all of my effort had gone into something that was destroyed. All my content is still on my own paid-for self-hosted blog.

@adoran2 Out of curiosity, does Readwise.io scratch your Readmill itch? I pay for Readwise and have been happy it’s it.

@canion I pay for it too but unfortunately the itch is still there. Readwise collects my stuff, but the social features and reading session tracking that were built into Readmill are missing. I used to be a regular visitor to the homepage to see the timeline, highlights and discussions on what people were reading.

@adoran2 And I assume Dropbox bought it as an acqui-hire because I’ve not seen anything from them that would appear to leverage the technology.

@canion Yup. They bought the brains, and shut the service down. I’m not sure if they were looking to recreate a reading experience on Dropbox during their ‘expand into everything’ phase, but I didn’t see anything. Readmill’s classy exit of giving us a whole bunch of files — static HTML and a file to upload to Goodreads — cushioned the blow, but only a bit.
