@aa (I wish mb had a messaging feature, but it doesn't so:) Can you recommend a set of tools for hand-carving things like spoons and maybe small crosses? I know about Woodcraft and Garret-Wade. Cost is a bit of a factor :-) . Any other misc. advice appreciated. I always enjoy following your projects!
@JMaxB Absolutely! You can start with a very simple toolset of three: carving axe, sloyd knife (this is one of two that I use daily), and a hook knife (this one is nice because it is double edged). It will also be helpful to have a small hand saw to shorten the wood as needed. The carving axe is used heavily to remove a bulk of the material, the knives come after the axe has given you most of the shape, being used to do the smaller cuts that the axe is too large for. The links above are good tools to start with, priced right too. I have also purchased knives from here (small shop, highly recommended).
Regarding the carving axe: I use the Gränsfor Bruk large carving axe and is the only one i have used, so I cannot necessarily recommend another one...do you research for this if you plan to buy one. The axe is the only tool I would suggest spending a bit more to ensure you get one of high quality. I purchased mine from here, but looks like it is currently out of stock. An option is to start with a spoon carving kit like this one, so you can skip the axe work and get right into the carving end of things.
