My poor work laptop has not seen a shutdown in two weeks. So many Vivaldi, Terminal, and Goland windows open. Not to worry, laptop. Soon they’ll all be closed and you can rest until Monday (or until I start you up over the weekend to check how a migration is progressing).

@V_ I lost a 69 days uptime on my work macbook because I had to reboot for an update earlier this week. :’(

@V_ It’s more for me than the computer. I’m pretty unorganised when it comes to leaving windows open, and by the end of the week, there’s so much mess that I need to shift through. I like the idea of coming to a fresh desktop at the start of the week with nothing open.

It’s also probably because I got into the habit of shutting down computers growing up. Old habits die hard I guess.

@pcora Ooh, that’s not nice. I think the longest I went on a desktop without a reboot was probably 3 weeks to a month. Definitely less than 30 days.

@pcora I used to try to get high uptime numbers. But its impossible with the modern macs. My re Ord was something over 150 days once with an old g4 laptop.

@lmika ok, that makes sense and I could also profit from the clean slate. But I just using system chaos :-). It takes too long for getting the dev system up and running again after a new start. And especially losing Th terminal history is a bother.

@V_ Yeah, that’s a fair point. It only takes around 5-10 seconds to get Goland up and running to a point where I can start dev work. If I was using Xcode or Android Studios which, in my experience, can take many minutes to be ready, I’d probably suspend more too. I can agree about loosing Terminal history.

@V_ Yea, I had over 180 days in the past. Nowadays is harder as OS updates require reboot more often. Still, I can sometimes get a good number. Just checked my personal mac and it’s 17. But it’s asking me to reboot for an update! :(

@lmika ahha no way! I hate when I have to reboot. If I was on linux, I’d probably have year + uptime easily.

@pcora yep these pesky little updates all the time. But my main blocker for uptime is the computer running out of file descriptors or application memory.
