My biggest issue with EVs is not the vehicles manufactuers are selling, but the lack of a network of charging stations. If you want to get mass adoption then you better get gas stations to convert to charging stations.

@joelhamill It's a catch-22 situation, right? Unless there are enough EVs on the road, there's no demand to have a wider network.

@pratik and @joelhamill, and it would also help if everbody uses the same charging connector so all the charing stations are compatibel.

@V_ Yup. And now’s the time. The EU should focus on this instead of the USB-C connector.

@pratik Exactly. I was looking at EVs and their range and they seem to get decent range, for the most part, 100-300 miles on average. This is great for around the city driving but what about road trip driving? It's not like I can just jump on the freeway and drive and know that there will be a charging station when I need one. If there was a better network I think my last car purchased would have been an EV.

@pratik older EVs with ChADeMo will eventually miss out on rapid charging when those chargers are replaced.

@V_ @pratik @joelhamill This right here. Unless all the chargers are universal and compatible, it does nothing to help people make their transition to EVs. We just got a whole set of Tesla chargers here in town, which big surprise, are proprietary to Tesla cars only. Ignoring locking out a huge swath of drivers, it also assumes that everyone can afford — or want to buy — a Tesla.

@pratik which is interesting, how my stance on that topic is completley opposite on the stance I had regarding Apple and the EU. But actually it is the same Apple should just embrace USB-C.

@pimoore, I've noticed that here (Switzerland) most of the public charging stating just have both types of connector. But when you are in hotels you often only get chargin spaces for Teslas – I suspose that is mostly a question of time. It just takes a while until hotels upgrade and invest into such stuff. // @pratik @joelhamill

@cn thanks for letting me know. I had something on the mind along these lines but was not 100% sure.

@V_ I was pretty sure Apple was going to end up embracing USB-C eventually. It wasn't the standard when Apple launched the Lightning port which in itself was a big improvement over the 30-pin connector. I still struggle with deciding when it is appropriate for the government to impose a standard especially in a field that's innovating rapidly. Now that I think about it, the car chargers are in a similar situation now.
