I’m currently on a search committee for the new director of our School of Information Science, and it’s kind of neat that academics get to hire their own bosses. My students’ minds were blown yesterday when I explaned this.

@spgreenhalgh I wish the public sector did more of that, especially for an administration change. We can sometimes just get, “Here’s your new politically connected boss who may or may not be competent. He’ll let you know if you’re being retained or not.”

@UndamnedOne I remember a political science class in college where our professor offered a defense of bureacracy, saying that the alternative was even more political appointees. So, yes, more professions ought to have this privilege.
