@Gabz That’s what I’m doing. This is my safe place. Mastodon is still working for me, I can still hide from the mess over there.

@Gabz I’ve demoted Twitter to web app status, which effectively makes it a barely used app for me. I also unfollowed all but a handful of accounts and made lists for the other accounts I may or may not be interested in seeing at all. Finally, I switched my account into protected mode.

So the app itself is separated into a difficult-to-reach box and then within the app my account is separated from the honey traps on the platform. Frankly, the honey on there is entirely rotten and life is too short for uninvited noise.

@gabz oh! Also: as for broad news, no social media is a primary source for me at all and has not been for a very long time. Being a better overall observer of news makes it a lot easier to avoid falling into the traps of these platforms.

@Gabz first, sorry about the ocassional politics on MB. Second, I use Feedbin to follow select Twitter accounts. It helps me because I can put them in a folder, read them when I want, and it dramatically reduces my desire to engage back.

@jsonbecker that is a something I have been thinking about lately, use Feedbin to get some twitter related stuff for specific people as well as Instagram, that way I do t have to open those app unless, again, I am mentioned somehow and most of the politics I see here are behind a blog post title so I can either intentionally read it or not, which is why I said it was not so much in my face. On twitter on the other hand, I see short videos , I see mentions and retweets they are hard to avoid. 😁

@Gabz Yep exactly! The turning point for me was admitting that the whole platform is compromised; to get any chance of a healthy state on there you must put in a lot of difficult work (with settings, etc) and even then it is unlikely those changes will work reliably.

The people who are in control of the platform have no reason at all to improve this situation and so life is too short to waste on any such effort there. Just put it in a box, train your brain to demote it with regard to the time and energy you allocate to it, and move on to better alternatives.

@Gabz wait... can Feedbin do Instagram? I didn’t think it could. That would be amazing.

@jsonbecker I haven’t tested yet but I found a website that lets you create an rss fees from/for a specific user

@Gabz I put a rule in my RSS to remove certain posts from view but … it still gets through. Like you I’m sensitive to that stuff.
