Great listen featuring a very knowledable chap that I have followed for years.

BUT if you think Uber is the best thing since sliced bread and you can’t be convinced otherwise. Forget about it.

”Uber is a massive wealth extraction play that only benefits the ultra rich.”

@JohnPhilpin I had a few experiences this year wherein I was treated well by a taxi company, and then the other was completely awful, including when I wasn't even using them. The drivers for Uber did their job well, they were everything they needed to be in a time of great need; meanwhile the black-cab drivers have been fucking awful.

I'm glad that people in the metropolitan bubbles -- the big cities such as London and San Francisco -- and in the web echo chambers have all managed to carve a nice black-and-white narrative for these problems, however it would be good if people could understand that the world is a lot bigger than that.

@simonwoods did you listen to the interview ... it is much more about Uber the company than Uber drivers versus black can drivers .. and yes the taxi issues of London, SF and NYC are nothing like the issues faced in ‘Upper Throck Hampton’ and similar places - again an important point made

@JohnPhilpin FWIW this was in Liverpool. So this is in a city, and a global destination at that; we're just not in the monstrous class of "metropolitan", at least not yet. But I agree with the spirit of your theoretical example; in fact, I'd say that hints at the much broader issues of which this is but an element, specifically with regard to how, as a society, we're failing to address local needs with local solutions.

I will listen to the interview. There's a good chance I'll agree with a lot of it. I'm just also seeing a lot of commentary on these issues that fail to include the relevant intersectionality of the debate, and that often means we miss out on a diversity of perspectives that are more than worth having.
