Another iOS 13 request:
Dark mode is all well and good, but I want it to automatically switch based on ambient light (much like OmniFocus/Things/Drafts do today)

@matpacker @ciaran They have Scheduled for sunrise and sunset, and responsive Wallpapers. Beyond that, this feels like the kind of thing that could either be in a dot release or a nice addition for next year ("We've got Dark Mode with Machine Learning!", etc).
@simonwoods The scheduled solution is only a half solution. What if I’m at a lunch presentation in a dark conference room? Or go to an afternoon movie? I want it to just switch on the fly. Hopefully if enough people ask for this early in the beta process we’ll get an option added by the time iOS 13 is released. (So please ask!!)
@ciaran I mean... IDK it sounds like a lot for the usual beta process. Maybe with enough demand? Especially if influential pundits amplified the request? In the meantime it might be possible to create a workaround using Shortcuts.
@simonwoods Yeah, I’m hoping the Relay folks pick up on this issue. But I wouldn’t think it would be all that big an ask from a coding point of view. Plenty of apps do it already (and without any machine learning craziness).
@ciaran I'm thinking of how this is system-wide and at the core of the OS, which is also tied to the hardware, especially the new hardward which is probably in production right about now. Don't get me wrong, I agree this would make Dark Mode a fantastic, all-round feature but I'm just not aware of this kind of addition having being made during the beta period in the past.
@simonwoods I like “hardward” too. Maybe it’s hardward made of wood? (The greenest iMac ever—iMac oak!)
But since Apple is already allowing you to switch with just a tap on control center, I can’t imagine that the overhead is so large that you could tie it to an ambient light sensor.
I suppose there’s a theoretical risk that you’d get some flickering if the room happened to be at exactly the threshold brightness. (But again, that hasn’t proven to be a problem with existing apps that do this already).
@simonwoods ahhh, I didn’t see the schedule part, at least it wasn’t shown in the initial setup. For me, it’s all I need Dark Mode wise. Thanks for pointing it out!
@ciaran They'll move onto city names for the OS; macOS Oakland, heh.
Yeah, they have already spent a lot of marketing capital in touting ambient changes to the screen so it does make sense. However, I do think that ought to have made it into the keynote, even if just on the word cloud.
@matpacker No problem! 👍🏻 Yeah, that keynote was ridiculously packed. The "All New Features" tab for the previews of each OS is... just so long. Feels like at least two years worth of stuff.
