OK I have to grudgingly give some props to the Seattle Police for rolling up a violent robbery crew that was targeting exclusively Asian American victims in South Seattle. However we should probably note that the way this gang got entry to homes was to impersonate... the Seattle Police!

@troutgirl that’s awful. I can’t imagine the stress.

@rick Unfortunately there is a stereotype that Asian Americans make the best crime victims because 1) they tend to be smaller and less prone to owning guns, hence "easy targets"; 2) they are believed to own portable goods like jewelry and expensive purses; and 3) they are believed to be less likely to involve the police due to their own difficulties with the justice system.

@troutgirl I knew about 1 and 2 but not 3. I live in Japan, and tell Japanese people traveling that they should be careful overseas because pickpocketing and mugging are real. Here, people walk away from an ATM waving money as they put it in their wallet, and it makes me cringe when I see it. Generally, being pretty clueless about how that might be perceived in a less safe place. (not that Japan doesn't have its share of crime of course, but it's simply more overt in other countries)

@rickcogley The Japanese are a trusting people. I remember being impressed to see people leave their phones on tables in a public place. Do that anywhere else and you'll have low to zero chance of finding your phone when you go back. My son dropped his Pasmo card in Ueno park, we doubled back and it was still on the ground. I love Japan.

@Rori I so agree. I have been careful when I travel because I’m so used to it here.
