Thinking about how I use bookmarks and considering:

  • regularly delete all bookmarks
    • with the exception of a few, protected sites
  • use bookmarks as a temporary space
    • with links moved ASAP to their relevant place (to-do, shared with people, etc)
    • the rest are forgotten

@simonwoods Have you looked at pinboard.in ? It's not just a bookmark service but it can be used as a discovery tool because you can search across all members public bookmarks.

@simonwoods what @bradenslen said - I use it (but really need to use it more) ... but for example with tagging - and a little bit of CSS - you can easily create ‘live lists’ such as this:

@bradenslen @simonwoods Pinboard was my #1 Internet tool for many years, very simple and very powerful. I also liked that it was also pretty much run by one person. And later I discovered he had his own excellent blog (Idle Words), very well written on unexpected topics, like his trip to Antarctica.

@Ron @JohnPhilpin @bradenslen Yep, had a Pinboard account for a couple of years now. Options such as this make it possible for me to consider the new approach whilst maintaing a backup of those most important sites.

I'll make at least one last backup of my current heap of bookmarks before trying the new approach, and imagine any future changes will include the incorporation of Pinboard in the process either way.
