September 1 is the Church New Year, celebrated modestly in church with a few extra hymns. Coming at this time, it feels more like the new year to me than the January 1 civil version. I suppose that, to feel as I do, you have to love the arrival of Fall.
@JohnBrady At first it felt strange to be going through a new year's celebration, but the more I thought about it, the more it seemed like a natural fit for this time of year (especially with school getting back in session).
@JohnBrady With me it runs a layer deeper. Read this Kevin Williamson piece (if not paywalled). Then imagine going off not to college at age 18 but to boarding school at age 14 — and off somewhere-or-other this time of year for the next 8 years.
