@ReaderJohn I experienced the reverse of this in my Cambridge MA neighborhood in the 1980s: The vehicle that cried "Socially Conscious!" was a beat-up, faded Volvo, usually adorned with stickers for various causes. We used to joke that someone could open a profitable Volvo aging service: process your expensive new Volvo to fit into the activist aesthetic.
