@Munish I’m happy with Telegram, managed to move a couple of friends over. Tried Signal, but no one joined. WhatsApp is king in the country, almost everyone uses it, no one even asks anymore what the other ones are using. Everything is arranged in WhatsApp groups, there’s one for every little thing.
@donnydavis @Munish Messages.app would be cool, but haven’t even given it a fair try, and I started on the iPhone 3 I believe. About half the people I talk to have iPhones and no one uses it. Only person I use it with is my mom, she uses it on the iPad.
@maique yeah, I think a big reason was due to texting charges early on and iMessage didn’t come out until iOS 5, I think. So the other chat apps got a head start converting users and then nobody wanted to switch.
@donnydavis I used iMessage a lot too but similar to you a lot of people use WhatsApp. Frustrating. Wire is a good and secure app. Based on Switzerland it’s prob the most secure
@Munish haven’t heard of Wire before. Will have to check it out. Messaging in 2020 is one of the most frustrating things. So many siloed apps. I wish that there was just one protocol for it and then everyone can choose their own app. Just like email. I’ve considered telling everyone to just email me if they want to get in touch. 😂
@Munish I don’t like it either, but it’s one of those situations where I’ve been trying to convert people to other apps and there’s just no point. Most people don’t care about that, at all. Closest friends all made the move, so I guess it’s 90% Telegram and the rest WhatsApp by now.
We did have to create a groups, on WhatsApp of course, to keep family and friends up to date with tinyMovieStar news ¯_(ツ)_/¯
@donnydavis You might be right. In the beginning I remember using it with friends who had iPhones, but soon everyone was just using WhatsApp and not giving it a second thought.
@maique @donnydavis yes it is frustrating with silo apps and people preferring what’s app for convenience. apps.apple.com/gb/app/wi... The prob with the likes of wire, is it is another app to convince people to use
@Munish I install them all! Installed Wire, Threema, Element, and others I don’t even remember any more. The argument that really helped move people to Telegram ? The infinite supply of stickers!
@maique us humans are so easily pursued by the small things. I work in Cyber Security, so for me telegram is better than what’s app for sure
@Munish I try to keep up to date on security and privacy issues, but when I start talking about the subject people start rolling their eyes 🤣 I can only have this conversations with my wife (she doesn’t care that much, but cares enough about me to pretend) and with one brother-in-law.
@donnydavis ¯_(ツ)_/¯ There are a couple of really nice features in the app. But the stickers seal the deal.
@Munish currently using Sphere to manage the bigger groups. It’s in Beta but got lots of potential. www.sphere.me
@Munish I've been using Signal for a while and have been surprised how many I've pursuaded to start using it as well, including die-hard Whatsapp users. I don't think it's to the exclusion of Whatsapp but they have been quite happy to jump on board with Signal as well.
@strandlines I think the challenge is always to convince people to move over. Hopefully this will happen more one day.
