Experimenting with a micro.blog account. Goals:

  • keep posts on my own domain…
  • … but also be able to easily write from my phone
  • write short and medium posts (long ones on main blog)
  • keep a foot in the door at Twitter by cross posting

Interesting. It doesn't say that it is cross posted, but I made the above post from micro.blog: whispers.micahrl.com/2023/03/13/exp…

Also, apparently it strips out the asterisks I used for bullet points :/

@micahrl Welcome! I, too, thought I'd write short and medium posts here, but long ones on the main blog. Then I decided (a) that's too complicated and (b) I don't write enough long posts to justify keeping a second blog.

@MitchW yeah the complexity is a downside. I want to keep my current long post workflow, and have a portfolio site that is more polished, but what's missing is a way to post quickly from my phone. Might change this in the future but this is a good place to start.

It's cool that it's Hugo based; if I spend a lot of time here I can apply my existing Hugo theme skills to customize the site.

@micahrl I should learn Hugo. I have customization ideas.

I think about great blogs, like daring fireball, kottke , and scripting.com that don’t make any distinction between long posts and short posts.

@micahrl welcome! i started the same way and ended up consolidating everything here. it is great! totally makes sense though to have that other more polished space.

@micahrl micro.blog has several good mobiles apps, particularly for the iPhone, which is what I use. I frequently post from my iPhone and iPad. But I rarely use the micro.blog app for that. I use Drafts for text posts, and the Sunlit app for photos.

@MitchW Watching the Sunlit development over the years is one reason I wanted to come over here. It looks really nice, looking forward to playing with it.

@micahrl I like Sunlit a lot, but it seems to me to be an elegantly simple app. Am I missing dimensions?
