jwz: Welcome to year four of 14 days to flatten the curve..

The pandemic is still killing 11,000 people per month in the US alone, but supposedly it’s over. I guess that’s what “over” means now.

If you choose to stand around inside a crowded room without wearing a mask — I think you’re a fucking idiot.

Turns out, nearly every person I know is a fucking idiot.

I do not claim to be smarter than anybody else about this. I’m no more careful than anybody else. I stay home more than most people, but that’s my nature.

@MitchW That figure is false, or rather outdated. COVID-19 death rates in the USA dropped below 200 per day at the beginning of this month and continue to drop.

@MitchW Right, so about 2,000 per week. Not 11,000. The daily numbers continue to show a drop. I'd expect this week to be around 1,500.

I'm not dismissing that number, but (as an example) the most recent NHTSA figure says that about 3500 people per month died in US traffic accidents in 2021.

Heart disease, most recent figure I found in a two minute search: just over 58,000 people per month.

@MitchW

I just now realized you wrote 11,00 per *month*. I read it as per *week* (because that's what I always look at).

So, um, whoops.

My point stands, that 11,000 is not the same as the 40,000 or so per month that was happening this time last year. But I apologize for misunderstanding you.

@nitpicking No worries. And nearly 10k =/= 11k, so there’s that.

@MitchW Also, I'm mightily encouraged by the steady downward trend in the numbers.

@nitpicking And I thought your initial nitpick was 200 per month, when you actually said 200 per day.

I think the expression here is "arguing past each other."

@nitpicking That is indeed encouraging. May it long continue!
