Five ways to be really foolish with an activity tracker

@philipbrewer Did you know that 10,000 steps was purely a convenient ad campaign that fit nicely with the Japanese language? Apparently, in the real world, research has show that while 10,000 steps will do no harm, the benefit curve levels out at about 7,000. www.youtube.com/watch
@Miraz Iāve followed the studies on that. Very few people get that many steps, so you need very large studies to be able to tell if that much walking provides a benefit, but the studies Iāve seen seem to suggest that the benefits never vanish, they just get smaller and smaller.
@philipbrewer Perhaps more important, getting in all that walking takes time that could be spent on other health-promoting activities that would be of greater benefit. (Lifting, if you donāt already lift. Running, if you donāt otherwise run. Swimming, meditating, etc.)
@philipbrewer Yes, thatās what the sources Iāve come across say. What I find specially interesting is how an ad campaign had such an effect that people now take that 10,000 steps as āgospelā. š
@Miraz Another of the relatively rare instances when Iād happy to just have a ālikeā button. :-)
