I’ve been queuing for 40 minutes since the supermarket opened and have just reached the sign telling me it’ll be about an hour wait from here. Glad I brought my book.

Sign about waiting time.

@Miraz This is the new normal. :( We have been doing the same for 4 weeks already, going as early as 8AM for 9AM supermarket opening, just to make sure that we are the first batch inside. Yesterday, my wife went to another supermarket after lunch and the queue was quick moving and she got in in 5 minutes. Good luck!

@martinfeld Indeed, I am enjoying it. I finished the sample while in the queue and was able to buy the book and continue reading. Hooray for 3G Kindle. Nichelle Clarke Crime Thrillers, Books 1-3: Front Page Fatality / Buried Leads / Small Town Spin

@pratik It ended up a 3 hour trip: 30-40 minutes return drive, queue for a little over an hour, dash round selecting items from my list, queue to check out. Next time we need milk (and nothing much else) I'll try the local dairy (a shop that has bread, milk, snacks, tiny selection of other goods).

@Miraz Looks fascinating! Do you normally enjoy crime thrillers?

@martinfeld I sure do. They are ideally with lesbian or female protagonists, written by women and not too thrillery (not into gore / torture). Happy too with cosy. Not into fantasy / magic / fairies (unless by Kristine Kathryn Rusch). If also (space) sci-fi, that's a bonus.

@Miraz I love how specific your answer is—proper fandom! It’s great that you have those criteria; there’s no use in wasting your time with stuff that fails to make your reading worthwhile.

@Miraz In the mid 80’s I thought we would have wave of strong female leads in movies, but there was only the odd film.

I feel it has improved in the last couple of decades or so, but it usually is superheros, not “ordinary” women.

I thought Sigourney Weaver in the Alien “franchise” and Linda Hamilton, (to a degree) in the Terminator “franchise” did a great job, but I’d really like to see more strong female leads in movies. Britain may be better than Hollywood at this. 🎥 🍿

@odd Indeed! To call progress glacial would be attributing far too much speed to it. Britain does some very good work with a cadre of older women actors: Dame Maggie Smith and so on.

@Miraz Yes, she’s really good, also Judy Dench, amongst others.

@JohnPhilpin I’m sorry, but I haven’t seen that series. Do you mean Justice League? I haven’t seen those either.

I think the Kill Bill movies were great, although they, (Uma Thurman, and Lucy Lius character), had vulnerabilities, they also had great power.

@odd @JohnPhilpin @Miraz I’d forgotten that Lucy Liu was in Kill Bill. I hated those films (to the extent that I haven’t watched anything Tarantino has made since) but I’ve generally liked her in anything else I’ve seen her in, those tjat stick in the mind being Elementary 📺 and Cypher

@odd Hunger Games was first a trilogy of books and then a trilogy of movies - starring Jenifer Lawrence - highlighting because i thought the thread was calling out movies shows that had sinificant fenal leads …

@JohnPhilpin OK, I understand now. I haven’t seen the series, so I can’t judge for myself, but I’ll take your word for it.
