Nerd time. I’ve decided I need a laptop again. It’s been a great 6 months, but my iPad Pro is steadily dying and I can’t do everything on my phone (my only other computer).

My requirements are a Mac, with 1 TB drive. I can get an M2 w/ 16 GB RAM for NZ$2k, or an M4 for NZ$2.8k. Is the M4 worth it?

@yorrike I have a mere M1 MacBook Pro. I’d say the M4 would be more ‘future-proof’ — longer life before it can’t run MacOS31 or whatever. My particular problem though is 1TB isn’t enough — my photo library is huge. Will you have enough RAM / HD or do you need to trade latest model against more space?

@Miraz I sold my M2 MacBook Air to my parents for cheap (the discount it worth it for me not having to do any extra tech support due to it getting OS updates for years to come). It has a 1TB drive which is overkill for them. However, 1TB is enough for me. My photo library is ~250 GB so that gives me a lot of breathing room.
