There is one single reason why I pay the NYT for games and that is to be able to do the fortnightly Acrostic. This morning I was greeted with this notice, followed by incredible stupidity about how to cancel.

Notice that the Acrostic will no longer be available online. Screenshot showing that to cancel I must phone NYT during my night time.

@joshua I’m just glad I’ve worked my way through the entire Archive of Acrostics… and, why isn’t there just a cancel button on the website?

@Miraz I’m able to cancel via the web (they have started with it recently).

@Miraz it’s the biggest con from one of the biggest names in publishing. It’s a stain on their good name.

@teisam Thanks for that. I did already look under My Account but will check again later today. Seems I paid via Apple Pay so I did mean to explore if I can find the sub somewhere on Apple.

@Miraz If it’s Apple Pay then it is just a substitute for a credit card and you have to cancel via nytimes.com. If it’s via iTunes you should see it under subscriptions in iTunes or the App Store.

But the shenanigans by the likes of NY Times is why I try to pay online subscriptions via PayPal so that I can just cancel the payment agreement via PayPal if they don’t let me cancel online. I have done that with NY Times before.

@teisam Looks Like I’d got hooked up on International Options and hadn’t scrolled to the very end of the page. I’ve noted the page in my calendar and will try to cancel closer to when my sub runs out — just in case they change their minds. Thank you.

@Miraz To steal a line from Lily Tomlin on the early Saturday Night Live, “We are the New York Times. We are omnipotent.”

@ReaderJohn Why no cancel button on the website? In my experience, it’s so they can make you an offer you can’t refuse, like $1 per week for a year, rather than cancelling.
