@cliffordbeshers @adders I read it at first as 'single shifters', thinking that must be some workplace or parenting term. I was also going to ask what all those trucks were doing. Then I reread… 😆

@Miraz Shoreham Beach suffers badly from longshore drift, so the Shoreham Port team periodically shift shingle back towards Lancing to protect the port entrance.

It’s very disconcerting when you go for a quiet beach walk and a convoy of trucks rumbles by…

@adders That's fascinating. I've been aware of groynes on beaches since childhood sniggering over the word, but never quite knew what they were for. They're just one of the things you see on beaches, you know?

It's good to know they can move the shifted shingle back, reusing it again and again.

I should've said, 'Shove the shifted shingle shorewards,' for maximum alliteration.
