Well a 5.8 quake is one way to be woken while just drifting off to sleep. All good. No damage etc. another day another quake in New Zealand. 〰️

@Miraz glad you’re all right. I have never experienced an earthquake before. Can you feel one of that magnitude?
@Lynessence We get loads of earthquakes in Aotearoa New Zealand, ranging from ones we can't even feel through to big scary ones, and sometimes quakes that cause enormous destruction (eg 1931 Hawkes Bay and 2011 Christchurch earthquake. A 5.8 is pretty big in itself but what someone feels depends on numerous factors such as how far away it is, how deep it is, the terrain between you and the source, direction and a bunch of other stuff. We feel quakes strongly because our house is on piles that go down 6 metres. Our neighbours are on the ground on a concrete slab and don't feel so many. I knew this one was big but didn't bother getting out of bed. A year or two ago there were a couple that got me out of the house for the first time in my life. For example, 25 May 2020: miraz.me/2020/05/2...
@Lynessence The other thing is that earthquakes all feel different: a vibration, a shake, a roll, a lift, you never know what you'll get. 😀
@Miraz I remember that, and the picture! Scary stuff. I’ve only felt one quake here in Norway, I think it was in 1995. I remember the overhead lights were bouncing around. No damage that I can remember though.
@odd A couple of 'good' things about earthquakes: buildings here are constructed to strict codes so significant damage is uncommon. People are encouraged to secure items such as bookshelves in case of quake. The other thing: they arrive without warning so there's no advance stress like with a hurricane or something.
@Miraz We’re definitely not prepared for such events, and luckily we probably won’t have to worry about it either. It’s horrible to watch quake sites on TV.
@Lynessence @miraz I grew up in California during a particularly active time for quakes. This conversation prompted me to look up the two worst ones I remembered experiencing. 1992 Landers quake and 1994 Northridge quake, which were 7.3 and 6.7 magnitude, respectively. There were many others, but those were the worst from where I was located at the time they occurred. The 1987 Whittier Narrows quake was a lot snapper in magnitude, just 5.9, but because of the type of quake it was, it did a lot more damage. I was living almost directly over the epicenter for that one. So many memories! 🤪
@Lynessence @miraz “smaller” not “snapper”. I can’t figure out how to correct that post after the fact.
@Lioncourt @Lynessence Wow, 7.3 and 6.7 are both very serious quakes. I think the Northbridge one was where the freeway collapsed?
