@tkoola I'm still enjoying these words. When I saw “Hyvin” I initially read it as a (non-existent) English word. Then I thought it would make for a wonderful English word. It sounds very active and positive, kind of like “jumpin” or “buzzin”. Like a beehive, perhaps. I'd love that — A: “How's things?” B: “Hyvin!” I wonder if English has adopted any other Finnish words…

@Miraz @tkoola I thought about “high winds” when I read it! The Russian words are a bit harder to know the right pronunciation of, especially with my lack of knowledge of the Cyrillic alphabet.

@odd @tkoola That's where Google Translate comes in. Paste in the Cyrillic script and it shows it in roman script and offers a button to hear the Russian too.

@Miraz Yes, that should work all-right! This got me thinking that now, as @Apple has become a services company, maybe they should get serious about (in-app) translations. *🇺🇳

(*) I acknowledge they do have a translator app now.

@Miraz @odd wiktionary has pronunciation for most words, but one needs to know the base form for that. We are exchanging sound files to learn these ourselves. I think with a little bit editing I could share them here

@Miraz I think the only widely known Finnish originated word in English language is ”sauna”. It is even pronounced almost the same as in Finnish

@tkoola That would be interesting to see. I’ve actually bought the Pimsleur Russian courses 1, 2 and 3, but been so scattered in my attention, that I’ve only learned the word for “Excuse me”, which of course is a good starting point.

@odd Pimsleur is a good way to do it. One should go audio only first to get the hang of the phonological system of the language. There on one can start building up the vocabulary. “Excuse me" is a good start 👍
