Tonight’s entertainment: Beatrix in her school’s production of Hadestown.

@patrickrhone Love.
@apoorplayer @davoh @KimberlyHirsh @mrbeefy They did a great job with it.
We are huge fans and it’s Beatrix’s favorite musical so she put her whole heart into it as did the rest of the cast. A lot of fun.
@patrickrhone ❤️❤️❤️❤️ wrote about Hadestown on my Crucial Track for yesterday. Sure it was awesome!
@endonend Oooh, I just took a look. Nice coincidence! We’ve been fans since the concept album came out.
Personally, I find it fascinating to see/hear the evolution of the musical from the concept, to the original cast (which is the version we saw live), to the current Broadway production (which in some ways sounds/feels like a completely different thing).
I urge people to listen to all three back to back to understand how the same work can grow and change and evolve. Often in response to i’s audience and purpose. The concept to get an idea sketched out, the off-broadway to translate the concept to stage, and then the Broadway after they figured out what audiences were missing or what the story needed in the first version.
Writing this, I realize I could do a whole Crucial Tracks interview on such things. For instance, Maroon 5’s “Songs About Jane” actually was released as on a smaller indie label before they were picked up by a major and the album was… Um… Remastered and commercialized. The sound between the two is like night and day. I feel like it tells the story of an band who finds overnight stardom but in the deal they make for it must sacrifice who they really are.
Another obvious example: All of “Taylor’s Versions”.
All to say, yeah… This could be a thing.
@patrickrhone @endonend Just to derail this conversation a bit, Child Ballads By Anais Mitchell and Jefferson Hamer is one of my favorite albums ever. It’s genius arranging and interpretation.
@patrickrhone been listening to her original 2010 album and it’s pretty amazing. I’ve only seen the touring show at Shea’s in Buffalo (think it was 2023) and then one of the better local high school theater programs did it this past winter and that was actually pretty good considering. Fascinating how it has evolved.
If you ever have time to check out the Crucial Tracks app, would love to see you dig in to these comparisons. 😄
