Another Dutch meal. This is hutspot. It’s smoked sausage with gravy on a bed of potatoes, onions, and carrots. I liked it better than the one with kale but since I basically like all my foods separated as though I were a toddler, still not my fave.

@KimberlyHirsh I don't know if there's a genetic component to one's palate, but this ticks every one of my "comfort food" boxes and I like to think it's inherited from my Dutch great-grandmother. Even after 8 years as a vegetarian I'm still enticed by the sausage. 😅

@KimberlyHirsh hi Kimberly, really nice you are trying Dutch food. Why the interest? I saw try Boerenkool early (kale).

@marc0janssen I'm staying in Aalsmeer as my husband received a Fulbright award sponsored by the Universiteit van Amsterdam. I wanted to eat like a local.

@KimberlyHirsh ho, that explains it... well, I hope you feel welcome in Holland! And I hope you enjoy your stay here.... You could also try "Zuurkool",... and this can be prepared "steamed or cooked" but you can also make a "stamppot" from it like the Boerenkool stamppot (kale) you had or the Hutspot (carrots and onions) (We call Hutspot "Wortels met juin", which is the same dish but in this part of Holland we call it different... Long story short --> Try Zuurkool stamppot..... I can provide a receipe if you like..... Take care!!

@KimberlyHirsh This one is called Hutspot.... or where I live "Wortels met Juin". where juin is a dialect for onions... UI is onions... but here some people say JUIN... wortels = carrots.... zo is translates to Carrots with onions... which it basicly is.... take care!

@marc0janssen I liked it better than the other two but the version I got had an overwhelming flavor of pickled onion, almost like sauerkraut, so still not my favorite.

@KimberlyHirsh zuurkool is sauerkraut. I am not sure about the german version but in Holland we have some different version of the Zuurkool.. And yes it is pickled... (zuur == pickled).

I like Zuurkool the best, Hutspot (Wortels met ui) is second best!

Great you tried it!!
