A new idea to practice: Radical self reliance. If I have a problem, it’s probably me. And that gives me the power/agency to do something about it. Not wait for/expect others to fix it. It’s on me.

@patrickrhone I read Walden and Self Reliance, and thought they are very encouraging and a practical way to see life, I’m currently in need of help of others to get by, but stronger persons could certainly benefit from this mindset.

@patrickrhone Timely. This was in my quote review this morning:

"Every problem you have is your responsibility, regardless of who caused it."

@odd My thought on this we’re from a problem solving perspective mainly. We all need to lean on others and work together for many things. Many of us have the tendency to wait for others to change or otherwise fix the things we have problems with. Especially interpersonal ones.

@patrickrhone I like this. It's especially good for things that annoy you but aren't huge issues. Don't like the way someone else in your household is doing something? If it's a little thing & won't cause a rift if you take it over, do it yourself. Or get right with it being different from what you'd like.

@patrickrhone A few years ago I read a bio of William James, who suffered from physical illnesses as well as depression. As a young man, he decided he would take 100% responsibility of his experience of life. This insight and attitude was the turning point that led to his work as a philosopher and psychologist.

@patrickrhone I love the idea of radical self reliance. However, I like to balance this with stoicism, where my attention is only on the things I can actually change.

@Alligator Yep. Or, as I've said in the past. Don't worry. Do. If nothing can be done, don't worry.

@patrickrhone This is so true, and I know for myself at least I need to do better about picking my battles better, as to whether I need to fix it.
