Ask Micro.blog: Is there an effective way to find sites running on blot.im infrastructure?

andrewcanion.com
Ron
Ron

@canion Yes, @JohnPhilpin has made a list of them.

amit
amit

@canion I guess the only would be if the image caching option is used by the blogs, but most people on micro.blog would not be using it as it doesn’t render in app. I can’t think of an other way. But would like to know if there is - traceroute to IP may be? 🤔

amit
amit

@canion Yep, traceroute works. Shows you the Blot address.

canion
canion

@Ron Thanks Ron! Found it here.

Ron
Ron

@canion Good job. He may also be able to point you to writeups about how to set it up. I seem to recall there are some.

JohnPhilpin
JohnPhilpin

@canion yup - you found it - and you will see i linked to the resource list that @herself has made aswell - BUT - you made me think that I should add links to the actual blot sites that we run .... on it - and shall I add you to the blotters?

// @ron

JohnPhilpin
JohnPhilpin

Calling fellow blotters ... @amit @canion @cm @herself @jack @ron @sumudu @vasta

@canion was asking about blot sites this morning ... if you want to add yours in - let me know - and I will add it to this resource.

@JohnPhilpin good idea! We’re getting quite the resource list here :)

@herself so what URL shall I drop in for you ?

herself
herself

@JohnPhilpin oh, thanks! I am at discombobulated.co.nz :)

JohnPhilpin
JohnPhilpin

@herself Isn’t that your micro.blog site? Where do you keep your blot site?

herself
herself

@JohnPhilpin that’s my blot site. My micro.blog is just discombobulated.micro.blot. :)

herself
herself

@herself gah! .micro.blog

jmreekes
jmreekes

@JohnPhilpin I’ve got two Blot sites pensandplanes.com and thoughtsaloft.com

jmreekes
jmreekes

@JohnPhilpin That is an amazing resource.

canion
canion

@JohnPhilpin my blog site is at canion.me. I’m still trying to ascertain what content to put where: the challenge of many a blogger!

canion
canion

@canion I meant Blot site. #damnyouautocorrect

JohnPhilpin
JohnPhilpin

@canion alas that link doesn’t resolve for me - understand the issue re which content where tho !!!!

JohnPhilpin
JohnPhilpin

@jmreekes cool - and added

JohnPhilpin
JohnPhilpin

@herself got it - what template are you using on blot - looked very micro bloggy at first pass - meanwhile updated

JohnPhilpin
JohnPhilpin

@jmreekes glad you like - I think @herself is doing all the work

herself
herself

@JohnPhilpin it’s a variation on the console template. Got some help with the archives page, though I really want to set up a page with links for all my tags as well— haven’t figured that out yet!

herself
herself

@cm yours is a great example of blot, I think. I've often looked at it and thought: "like this!" :)

jmreekes
jmreekes

@JohnPhilpin Cool. The links aren’t working though. I forgot the www. on the links.

jmreekes
jmreekes

@jmreekes sorry for the confusion

JohnPhilpin
JohnPhilpin

@jmreekes and fixed - thankyou - which made me wonder about @canion link - so tried that - and it is working there aswell now

JohnPhilpin
JohnPhilpin

@herself a bit like this then ?

JohnPhilpin
JohnPhilpin

@herself one of those links on that page goes to this which is ugly and i don’t have the skills ot sort it - BUT it is blot's auto generated page of tags in use

jmreekes
jmreekes

@JohnPhilpin Cool. Thanks

herself
herself

@cm It's pretty bare-bones, but thanks!

herself
herself

@JohnPhilpin Oh yes, something like that. But did you add those links manually? I was hoping I could mustache my way into a template that would pick them up automagically :)

herself
herself

@JohnPhilpin Oh, whoops, just saw your second comment as I was replying to your first. I had no idea they did that automatically!

That said, did you have to do anything to turn that on? discombobulated.co.nz/tags just leads to a Page Not Found...

amit
amit

@JohnPhilpin Thank you for maintaining this John, it is a great list. My blog is run by blot.

amit
amit

@herself You can add a new page from Blot dashboard (in themes) and redirect appropriately.

canion
canion

@JohnPhilpin Thanks. Surprised it didn’t automatically redirect. I didn’t even know I needed the ‘www’!

canion
canion

@amit your site looks a lot less “blotty”. Well done on the customisation.

JohnPhilpin
JohnPhilpin

@canion not an expert - but there is something you need to set somewhere in your dns provider or something stuff !!!!

JohnPhilpin
JohnPhilpin

@amit and added here

JohnPhilpin
JohnPhilpin

@vasta and done and added here

JohnPhilpin
JohnPhilpin

@herself the pretty page is manual the ugly page is automatic - here is where I started

blottings.philpin.com/tags - replace my URL with yours - and that is the auto generation

JohnPhilpin
JohnPhilpin

@herself oh and i just saw this after i just sent that - and no - I didn’t do anything that I recall - in fact i THINK it was @ron that told me that trick - and it just worked

canion
canion

@JohnPhilpin Yeah, I hate dealing with DNS. I always seem to bugger it up and then not find out until propagation, and have to start over again.

amit
amit

@JohnPhilpin @herself It can be done by creating a new view on the web editor - wrote a brief how-to here. Hope that helps. I had to do that for separating my "social" posts.

JohnPhilpin
JohnPhilpin

@amit oh THATS getting added to my pinboard for blot.im tomorrow .. where I am starting to build an index of blot help - along with nested folders for tagging ... new news there aswell - thankyou

amit
amit

@canion Thank you Andrew. Wanted to go for a simple all text theme - inspired by so many greats here . And Blot granted full control.

@JohnPhilpin Glad you found it useful. I had captured my experiments with blot at my blog - all entries related to blot are available here. @herself

jmreekes

@amit @JohnPhipin @herself I’ve got some reading to do

herself
herself

@amit @johnphilpin Thanks for that info, and links on setting up the tags! Off to have a read now as well :)

herself
herself

@amit That's awesome -- thanks! I have just blogged my own steps here. Thanks so much again for your help :) @johnphilpin, you too!

JohnPhilpin
JohnPhilpin

@amit oh interesting - now I am reading your post and following along ... looks like my theme already had the tag view - which is why I pretty much had to do nothing - whereas @herself is starting from scratch.

JohnPhilpin
JohnPhilpin

@herself cool - and both pages now added to my blot.im pinboard

// @amit

amit
amit

@JohnPhilpin Nice 👍🏽 . Btw even I had to create my tags page from scratch. I had started with the default theme.

JohnPhilpin
JohnPhilpin

@herself well now - I couldn’t resist - so I took your code and painstakingly re-typed it and voila ... next step to put some structure and content around it, little bit of CSS work oh - and make my links actually work!

filed in 'reasons I have friends that don’t believe I should be allowed access to a computer’

thankyou

JohnPhilpin
JohnPhilpin

@herself see what I mean - links already fixed - simply by stepping away ... coming back ... slapping forehead ... correcting code and saving.

herself
herself

@JohnPhilpin huzzah! Looks good! Though after looking at @amit’s tags page I’m curious to know if I could somehow generate the links in a grouping (no new line for each link) like that. But I think I’ll quit while I’m ahead...for now :P

herself
herself

@JohnPhilpin probably the only time ever that something I’ve posted could qualify as “tech help,” hehe.

JohnPhilpin
JohnPhilpin

@herself like this? ... just compared @amit source to mine.

All you need to do is replace line break with ‘ ’ and you are done

herself
herself

@JohnPhilpin oh nice!! Yes, just like that. For some reason it seems more navigable that way, compared to a linear list.

amit
amit

@herself May be because we are so used to the tag clouds on our blogs. I remember the days when tag clouds were default in every side bar.
