A phone that starts at 1250€ up to 1650€. I know it’s more than just a simple phone, but still… This is ridiculous.

@hutaffe It's tough because Apple is getting their average selling price up but I'm wondering if how often people upgrade will be going down?

@EddieHinkle if Apple ever sold elite products, this and the last couple of years is a new era. Average selling price is nice for the shareholders… average people will move somewhere else.

@hutaffe @EddieHinkle

The iPhone 7 is $449 and still has a great spec.

Apple do not expect to sell their high end to everyone - and they won’t - but expecting the ‘hordes' to walk away because of the price - not gonna happen.

This is a good read if you want to explore further.

@JohnPhilpin Yeah, I don’t necessarily think they will walk away. But I think some (like me) will require more of an improvement year to year to buy more than every 2 years.

@JohnPhilpin I know, but this radically changed in the last couple of years. It was always more expensive etc etc, but IMHO their prices became unreal. I would not call me a horde but I think I earn good money and I have no idea how anyone could (or would) afford this.

@JohnPhilpin @hutaffe @EddieHinkle I even just grabbed a great condition X off eBay for $525 after comparing specs of new phones, my 7 Plus, and the X. Feels like a good move with minor spec sheet differences versus the new X versions.

@hutaffe Not that I'm really in the market for one right now, but this made me sigh. Remember the old days when a $1,000 phone was expensive?

@hutaffe I concur. As it is, I upgrade ever 3.5 years on average. My strategy had been to buy the mid-tier spec of the best iPhone offered. My iPhone 6S Plus cost me $849 at launch; the mid-tier XS Max is $1,249. That’s a whole Apple Watch worth of price inflation in three years.

@schuth that’s exactly my point! I guess the technology became too crazy. That’s great! And the advancements are astonishing. I get all that. But it’s way out of my league now. And that‘s true for really anything worth buying from Apple today.

@hutaffe I get the impression that Apple is becoming a luxury brand first and then a tech company that makes useful products. Hope I’m wrong.

@stefp I still think (or hope) it’s the other way around. But I think they lost it somewhere and miss to make good products at a decent price point for the non-rich. The effect is the same though. You used to get more than a two or three year old device for good money.

@JohnPhilpin that article is really interesting. Proves common knowledge that Apple can charge basically anything they want and people will buy it.

@EddieHinkle oh sure ... I am not moving off my current last year/ model ... which replaced my 6 ...

@hutaffe it's priorities ... Some people are prepared to spend 4 bucks a working day on a latte .... which equates roughly to one iPhone Xx per year .... not suggesting that is you by the by ... Just saying ...

For me Apple does a great design job and I love their ever improving specs ... But I bought a three, a five, a six and now a ten ... last year's .... the need to switch even every two years is no longer there ....

@hutaffe close .. though not proof ... but it is well understood that high end Apple is what it is. Not only that ... It is also very clear that they don't want to make products for the low end. They know what they do ... and do it.
