🔗 We know that Macs last longer in use. How much longer? – Asymco

But the really shocking revelation from the report is that more than half of Windows PCs used in big business get replaced within a year.

For most of my life of living in the Mac world - I have never worked out why Total Cost of Ownership is rarely used as a metric to make decisions around ‘which computer should I buy’.

@JohnPhilpin TCO should be used when comparing electric, hybrid, and gas-powered cars too. Even the pro electric sites sometimes say things like “the gas car [or truck] is much cheaper”. The cheapest cars these days are electric.

@llbbl i would argue before apple silicon the TCO was still better than on windoze - depends on how much you include - and what you count - but bundled software - time wasted - REAL like for like specs etc

@JohnPhilpin Hmmm, perhaps I oversimplified things. Electric car prices in Canada & the US are greatly distorted by tariffs, and the situation in Europe seems to be in flux, but China is producing good quality cars at aggressive prices. (ďżźWe can really get into the weeds on subsidies in China!)

In our experience, our Leaf seemed expensive until we saw not only how inexpensive it was per km to run but also how maintenance costs were almost zero! So far (except for the tiny 12V utility battery) it has been extremely reliable.

@the i think this is exactly right - down her in New Zealand the Chinese cars are very cool and definitely threatening the high end euro cars - teslas exist - but all probably have an invisible sticker on the bumper.

and their fast charging is also good enough for longer journies - on the ‘popular’ routes

@JohnPhilpin How would companies make money if everyone used their products for decades?

@JohnPhilpin If you bought Intel Mac right before they switched, then the upgrade cycle is less and the demand for the old architecture is decreased by a lot.
