@JohnPhilpin That is his modus operandi. He travels to another country, walks the cities, talks to people and shares his impressions. Often the people he talks to are poor and working class. He made a reputation for himself with an article in The Guardian (?) about how McDonalds restaurants have become de facto community centers. I think his insights are fantastic, particularly about how China, for all its flaws, have leaders with a vision for the betterment of its people and for industrial policy, where America and much of the West does not. He’s not a China booster, though; China’s vision is great in some ways as he sees it, but deeply flawed in others.

@MitchWagner china’s game is so long that the west hasn’t even got telescopes strong enough to see .. much less comprehend. Two big differences

China like Singapore has had a singular North Star for decades which doesn’t change strategically even as the leadership does.

In the west long term is just the other side of the next election cycle and/or in business the next quarterly report ( a tad unfair but you’ll get the point )

In both cases .. leadership changes result in massive strategic swings .. with the inevitable result of significant Brownian motion.
