At 2 minutes 40 seconds in ‘the voice’ kicks in from New Zealand.

SHIVERS

The song was originally written nearly 100 years ago about one of the most damaging floods in American history - sharing now as some of the most damaging floods ever to hit New Zealand in the past three weeks.

Needless to say it came to mind as I sit in LA reading the news (as I have been for 3 weeks now) that has been unfolding in New Zealand since pretty much the day I left the country.

Record rain and wind, 6 people people have already lost their lives - including a fire fighter with a second remaining in critical condition. 100s of houses tagged ‘unsafe’, 1,000, 3,500, 6,000 (depends what you read and when) people currently logged as ‘uncontactable’ and insurance claims already north of 20,000.

Some more detail ... its sometimes hard to know where to start.

AND - Even as I think about the New Zealand devastation - let us not forget that there are thousands dead and millions displaced in the earthquake fallout in Turkey and Syria

"Death toll of 47,000 expected to rise and WHO says 26 million people need assistance across both countries"

@JohnPhilpin Sadly, there’s been another 6.4 magnitude earthquake in the already worst hit city.

@pimoore just saw that … the planet seems to be doubling down on ‘ The ‘once in a century’ events by giving us a second one shortly thereafter.

It’s a terrorist strategy … hit the target - and when the help and support comes - hit it again.
