@lmika that is interesting. I always call it "tin foil" without thinking, although I know it's aluminium. I wonder if a similar thing was made of tin in the past.
@rickcogley Yeah, quite possibly. A "tinny" is another good one: here in Australia it's used to refer to a small (aluminimum) boat, or an (aluminimum) can of beer. I'd imagine tin was used in previous versions of both.
@lmika I thought it could have the etymology of being foil for a tin, not of tin. But Wikipedia says tin foil was available before aluminium foil and ppl just kept calling the new thing by the old name.
