Feedland Hot List
Found here is much more interesting now that more people are getting on to the platform. Much more of a variety of feeds. Nice.
My Feed Reader
My main feed reader is - and will remain - NetNewsWire. More of that sometime if there is interest.
Categories (Part 1)
I discovered categories pretty quickly and like how they can be used to control which feeds fit under which tabs on the news feed …
You will see that I have three separate tabs …
This is where I would like to see some modifications … // @dave
Would be great if each tab had its own URL. Right now my URL is http://my.feedland.org/jgphilpin/ and once there I decide which tab I visit.
How much better if the URL was more like http://my.feedland.org/jgphilpin/vrmpeeps - which would mean that I could use that to point people to.
This is why I set up a second account on Feedland under a second twitter account which is ONLY following my own feeds.
CName
news.philpin.com actually points to http://my.feedland.org/jgphilpin/ - and it all works - thanks to changing CNAME as @dave's support notes say.
What ISN'T working is that when I get to the final URL - it resolves to http://my.feedland.org/jgphilpin/ NOT news.philpin.com.
Pagepark is one solution to this - but when I read
How to get started quickly with PagePark.
Install Node.js if you don't already have it running, including the NPM package manager.
I tend to move on untilI have more time. Which I probably won't have.
This is one reason I left 1999.io at its core a great product - but not simple enough to change things around for those of us that sit on the 'poet' end of the spectrum.
News Feed
Somehow the ‘settings’ for my news feed got deleted. No idea how. Bug, operator error or simply ‘one of those things’ - who knows, but deleted it was.
Despite using CSS from @johnjohnston’s site originally - I had a devil of a time trying to refind that. Eventually did and have now saved that CSS in my snippets library in case it happens again.
Interesting that other than a slight color switch how the two news feeds on the two accounts appears to be so different …
JG Philpin Feed - with No Tabs
Looks like when you add a second set of categories for a news feed - the overall appearance changes. ( I just tried it)
Personally - I like the read out of white style but that is likely to be a CSS change that I am not going to take on by myself!
HotList News (Part 1)
@dave maintains a hotlist - which is essentially 'The 100 most popular feeds in FeedLand' You can find the list under 'menu'.
But you might not know that there is in a totally different place (under 'tools' / 'special pages') - the actual hot list news - which is basically the latest news emerging from that top 100 list.
Nice.
Hotlist News (Part 2)
@dave It isn't quiet as critical now - but as more and more people join the service - I would like to see the hotlist divided into two (maybe more?) different groups. This way sites like NYT, Radiolab, Gizmodo, WaPo don’t drown out the voice of the 'indie blogger'.
Corporate / People are the two immediate category split and then maybe have podcasts appear in their own stream (though I appreciate that this is more easily said than done!)
Categories (Part 2)
This is the list of personal feeds that I am using my second twitter account to follow.
@dave would be great if I had the ability to edit the feed names locally - so that I can easily distinguish between different feeds.
This MIGHT be an edge case ... BUT
If Blogger 1 and Blogger 2 both name their feed 'Cool Feeds' ... and I am subscribed to both - would be good for me to easily distinguish between the two in my own river.
Categories (Part 3)
@dave would be great to be able to see a grid of feeds i follow down the y axis and the 'categories' on the x axis. This would allow me to check / uncheck feeds to appear in which categories at a single glance.
@JohnPhilpin -- i agree. right now the hotlist isn't saying very much. most of what's there is just the initial setup for new users.
@JohnPhilpin -- there's a lot of stuff tucked away in corners of the product. glad you found that one. ;-)
@JohnPhilpin -- we'll try to help, if its reported on the support board on github or slack. the links are in the Docs menu.
@dave will take a look ... thankyou.
