Media needs to understand that news is homogenous and thus a commodity and so free.
Readers need to understand that editorial, opinion, analysis, investigation is unique and as good as the people doing it - and thus not s commodity and so should be paid for.
The starting point should be the media separating the two AND allowing me to buy in micro chunks ... in the old world I didn’t need to commit to a subscription to read an article - I bought the issue ... we need to get back to something like that.
@JohnPhilpin news sites are kind of like streaming services. One can only subscribe to so many before the monthly cost becomes untenable.
@johnphilpin @hawaiiboy I agree with you completely!
I had hoped that this was where AppleNews+ was headed but alas not.
I would love to have access to a micropaid sea of articles, funded from a single subscription. I thought Apple was setting up to be the arms-length broker who would prevent cross-site tracking and manage the payouts.
Maybe it can still happen?
@the would be nice - right?
@JohnPhilpin a world where you can buy a pdf issue of a magazine at retail price without the hassle of a subscription or jumping through hoops? But why would they make it easy for you?
@the Apple news+ could have easily implemented a Scroll type offering but they just renamed a company they bought that’s doing shitty online versions of magazines. I’m glad to drop out of the News+ service because it’s not appealing at all!
