React.js deemed too complex and not in the ‘spirit of Wordpress’. But there is ClassicPress, an alternative to WordPress without Gutenberg & React.js

WP 5 with Gutenberg will be available this month. What do you think? Storm in a tea cup or a major fork in the road?

@JohnPhilpin There's nothing like somebody tweeting about twitter to feel like they have a good grasp on what the tweeters think about twitter... this is no different; whether those of us on the more invested side of the culture like it or not, the vast majority of people simply could not care less about these types of changes. After all, it's not like Automattic subverted a democracy.

@simonwoods not sure that is the point ... two big takeaways for me - they don’t have to support old legacy ... like WP does and it will continue to work as it always has done - and will be simpler - which for people like me works …

that said - I kinda like gutenberg - to me it is simpler than the current approach .. once you have your head around how it all works … but if it is going to mean that I can’t as easily self support my sites - then that's a debbie downer - i just don’t know enough of the pros and cons at a technical level ….

@JohnPhilpin Right. I think there are two things here; the technical consideration from an individual POV and how things are likely to go from the broader POV. I think it's non-issue as far as the latter is concerned, whilst the former... well, I try to not spend any time on these things anymore since CMS-hopping is a distraction black hole. However, I can see how Automattic might lose their grip on the personal blogging crowd.

@simonwoods @JohnPhilpin I hear there's an obscure app, maybe called MarsEdit?, that allows one to ignore the web editor. 🙃

@JohnPhilpin It depends on how many of my plugins they break and which ones. Many existing sites depend on certain crucial plugins, that's why they chose WP as their CMS. If WP breaks those I'd migrate away from WP - and that will cost me hard cash to pay for a replacement.
