Opening a new jar of Vegemite is one of the greatest joys in life.

@martinfeld I have Marmite in the house, but the pleasure is (I maintain!) equal.

@martinfeld I’ll take your word for it. But it looks like a jar full of tormented human souls. 😆

@Cheri @rogerscrafford Haha I love the contrast in your responses. I told my wife @NTKF, who hates Vegemite, and she said, ‘I’m the tormented soul in this house’. 😂😂😂

@martinfeld Mmmmm... Vegemite on buttered toast is my standard breakfast.

@Cheri I’ve never seen Vegemite described so perfectly.

@martinfeld Yum. Fortunately I can get Vegemite in the US via Amazon; I used to have to get my NZ family to send over a jar. My wife hates the stuff, so it's all mine.

@dejus It’s good that you found a way to get it! I’d be devastated if I weren’t able to buy it regularly.

@rogerscrafford @martinfeld Marmite is my preferred yeast spread - I swear that there is a difference in taste. Thankfully there is a store here on Maui that sells it. The rest of the family have their own feelings about my morning diet!

@crossingthethreshold We have one local source that sells both, side by side on the shelf. A surfeit of yeastiness! But I doubt I will do a taste comparison ... too much of a good thing.

@rogerscrafford 😄 It’s been a while since I ate veggiemite, but I know that if one was not available, I’d be quite happy with the other.

@crossingthethreshold @rogerscrafford Haha yes a side-by-side comparison would probably be too much! There’s just something super-satisfying about yeast spreads on really crunchy toast though, so I wouldn’t blame you if you did.

@tones I enjoy it with butter but I’m one of those sick people who enjoys it even more when lathered on toast without butter...

@martinfeld Never tried it, and though I'm not a picky eater, I’m failing to see the compelling case for trying it. But I found the other replies interesting.

@ReaderJohn A rule of thumb: if you like a lot of Japanese food (saltiness, umami), Vegemite/Marmite is worth a try. If you don't, you probably won't like V/M either.

@martinfeld I have to try this, if even for once! Wonder if it is possible to get it here…

@martinfeld I first heard of Vegemite from an Australian friend living in the US. She used to have her family mail her a regular supply. When we asked her about it, she said that only Australians could appreciate it, and wouldn't even let us try it.
I guess I've proved her wrong.

@ReaderJohn THIN layer, only a glaze, on toast. Don't spread like peanut butter or it will be gross.

@ReaderJohn Generally, people either absolutely love it or absolutely hate it. You’d simply be deciding where you sit, haha. 😀

@odd Best of luck! Just make sure that you have it on toast the first time. I like it thick and without butter, however it’s best to try it with butter and a bit thinner. (Great with avocado too!) Don’t destroy your tastebuds straight away.

@odd Yeah, do try it, but as said previously, spread it very thin, as thin as you can. It's a strong flavor, a little goes a long way, especially at first. (I put it on a bit thicker, but I'm used to it; great in a sandwich with cheese, or potato chips, or just by itself.)
