On the Wikipedia page for “Free Verse”, it says, “It does not use consistent meter patterns, rhyme, or any musical pattern. It thus tends to follow the rhythm of natural speech.”

If I ever meet the person who cast that last sentence in anapestic pentameter, I will buy them a beer. #poetry

@JoeHoffman Made me realize that I tend not to pronounce “rhythm” as two full syllables. It’s obviously more than one, though.

I like anapaests. This is from Marvell. It’s only tetrameter: he often didn’t quite make it to 5 feet.

Us Mars and Apollo and Vulcan consume
While he, the betrayer of England and Flander,
Like the kingfisher chooseth to build in the brume,
And nestles in flames like the salamander.

@artkavanagh I just tried to say rhythm as a one-syllable word and did not succeed.

@JoeHoffman I agree, it’s definitely not just one syllable. More like one syllable with a bump in it.
