Daring Fireball ‘POOR CHARLIE’S ALMANACK’ (AND THE TRAGIC STATE OF E-BOOKS)

With the e-book editions — Kindle, Kobo, Apple Books, whatever — you can merely read these books. With the web editions, you experience them.

Earlier in the iPads lifetime, magazine publishers experimented with digital editions of magazines that had animations, flourishes, interactions and beautiful design. WIRED especially… I loved them.

Then they all just….stopped 🤷‍♂️

I’d love to have an e-book standard that allows for this sort of beautiful design. For now I’ll be reading both these books in….a web browser I guess?

@DaveyCraney I loved those too, the newsstand app was great! Read a ton of wired, new yorker and there was this one news paper that was made especially for it, that one I liked very much, too I think the current E-Book Standard already allows for most of this, unfortunately almost no one is using those features anymore :(

@Heiji Yep! It was honestly one of my “Wow, this is the future of this medium” moments for me. I was blown away that it didn’t take off more than it did.
