@Gaby I’ve got similar thoughts. 8,864 entries in DayOne and yet tempted by Apple’s Journal app

@jasonekratz I see, I just have the one ever running journal and it is all entered automatically, for now.

@mroutley of if I were to go all in on the journal app, it might even be an entirely different type of “journaling” like a different approach

@Gaby yeah, I’ve been thinking of something like an ambient record of what I’ve been doing (podcasts, locations, workouts). DayOne would still be where I record how I’m feeling and thinking

@Gaby Love this take and your thoughts on it. What I’ve decided is that the Apple Journal app is not for everyone. It’s a great place to start. I actually switched my journal over there….well except for my automated stuff that comes from Micro.blog. But now I’m wondering why I need that. I have it on my blog and on Micro.blog.

@greghiggins yeah, I sort of feel the same, I have Micro.blog and I can export my “virtual journal” and save it whenever and perhaps Journal app can be more intentional. But again, I’m not quite there yet

@Gaby I get that. I’ve written my thoughts down about it and right now I’m all in. I’ve really started taking journaling serious over the past 6 months or so. So i haven’t invested a lot of time into Day One. That means i can explore this app. I decided to give myself all of November with it and then make a decision on if I want to stay with it or go back to Day One.

@Gaby That’s what I’m here for….kidding. I’m not trying to convince anyone to stay with the app. It’s a great starting point for people that don’t want to pay a sub for Day One. If you want something that’s already baked into the system and can pull stuff pretty easily without any effort on your part, it’s a great app (in my opinion). What I really like about it is the simplicity. You don’t have to set up a bunch of notebooks and determine what notebook this entry goes into. I have a feeling they’ll add that feature later on as well as some other “Day One” like features. But if they don’t, I think this can work.

I’m also not the type of person that goes back reads my journal entries from the past. Even in Day One, find that I rarely look at the “on this day” feature. Even though I think it’s a great feature. Part of me wishes there were more to the Journal app but then part of me thinks this is perfect as is. You can add media like pictures or voice memos. You can show locations. You can add media pretty easily via the share sheet.

There again, this isn’t a campaign for anyone to switch. What I hope people see is this app is available and it’s a good app to use if you’re starting or you want a place to capture some memories. Whether that’s through typing or pictures.
