🚲 🔋 Has anybody used a fat-tire ebike?

Do you have any warnings or recommendations?

@toddgrotenhuis I’ve been wanting one, but it’s out of my budget. They seem incredibly cool and comfortable to ride!

@toddgrotenhuis I ride a regular fat bike. Lots of fun, but tires are stupid expensive for decent ones.

@sgtstretch @odd @toddgrotenhuis Yes, I've got two. I started with the Lectric. It's a great choice is it's a smaller, easier to manage size. But adjustable for any size rider. It's been great. The other is the Rad Rover by RAD POWER bikes, a full size fat-tire e-bike. It's also a great choice BUT, it has a much higher stand-over height and with the larger size weighs a bit more. Still manageable but helps to be a bit taller and stronger. So, I'd suggest, important to be aware of the stand over height and weight. Both of those companies have good reputations as far as I've seen. But there are a lot of options out there!

And agreed, fat tires are more exensive. I've since transitioned to a standard (non-electric) fat tire bike because I do mostly trail riding. But others in my extended family like to use the other two e-bikes. I wouldn't sugget taking them on woodland trails with lots of sharp turns. But they're great for bumpy terrain, rock roads. In those cases be sure to lower the air pressure in the tires a bit.

In general if you'll be riding the road I'd consider something other than a fat bike. You can get smoother treaded tires for the road for fat-bikes but at that point you'd probably just be better off with thinner tires.

@Denny Thanks for the information! My use case is mostly asphalt and some gravel roads, so maybe not the best fit. Anyway, I got myself a second hand bike that’s going to be my ride for the foreseeable future, but those fat bikes sure look nice!

@Denny @sgtstretch I was definitely looking at The Rad Power 5 and 6.

I am 6’4” so I do benefit from a bigger frame.

Place I am going to rent is also mentioning Vtuvia?

@toddgrotenhuis Never heard of that brand but there are a lot of new ones coming out now that the market is growing so quickly. They look like good bikes at a similar price to the RAD bikes. If the local places you're renting from also sells and services the bikes then that would be reassuring.
