A Downy Woodpecker visited this week, an infrequent guest. Normally we get Hairy Woodpeckers. They look similar, but the Hairy Woodpeckers have longer beaks, different markings on the neck. This Downy seems untroubled by gravity. He’s picking bugs out of the dead pine in my back... cliffordbeshers.micro.blog

@cliffordbeshers A beautiful bird! Living in the woods there are a lot of dead trees still standing and I suspect it's one reason there are so many woodpeckers. There probably isn't nearly as much woodpecker habitat in urban and suburban settings. Of course, I guess it's also true that there's generally less quality habitat in urban and suburban settings.
